Fixing a Scope Base Mount   What to do ?   How to Do it   How it Turnd Out

A new rifle. A newly fitted scope rail. 10 rounds into initial load development. Shots completely off the target at 100 meters.

Having been down this road a few times before, when it happened, my most likely suspect was the scope rail.

Sure enough, the scope could be moved by hand left to right, the rail see-sawing perpendicular to the line of the barrel.

This action is round, front and rear. The gunsmith provided his manufactured rail that fits like a shroud over the action. The countour of the rail base does not match the contour of the action. This is not about why any competent gunsmith would do such a dumb thing. This is about fixing the stupid problem without going through the time and expense of having another custom rail made by someone else that may or may not know how to do a proper job .

When the rail is snug to the action, the contact point is a single line through the rails screws, and no other contact point.

The gap is large enough that you can see between the rail and the action.
